Danielle Anderson

“Oh, there you are! Reception said that you were in the building.”

Dani couldn’t help but curse reception in that moment, wondering why Detective Ryan was even asking for her.

“Something I could help you with?” She had stayed behind after the interview to file the paperwork and put together an improved timeline of events to support her case.

Jack’s testimony had made her feel a lot more confident about the case, reviving the prospect of even winning it. She believed them, whether or not tat was a foolish move, Danielle would have to see, but due to the statements that they had both given so far, Danielle could confidently claim that Charles didn’t kill his wife.

“I hear that you conducted the first interview?”

“Correct.” Her hand stayed firmly on top of the paper, not wanting to make it easy for him to get this information.

“I’m guessing by the look on your face that it was a success?”

“It could be classified as that, I guess,” Danielle spoke with a shrug, hoping her nonchalance would lead to a swift exit from Ryan.

“So, the kid claimed that it was two burglars?” Danielle nodded slowly. “Did it ever occur to you that he’s been prepped? That he could have his father whispering in his ear the entire time?”

“I…”

“Charles never truly liked Megan. That much was clear.”

“How do you know that?” Danielle was surprised at the effect that this question had on Ryan, not expecting him to take the defensive side at all.

“I...Well, I just knew them both, and Charles never seemed that happy when he spoke about Megan.”

“I think that we both know 'I just knew them' is a lousy defense.” Danielle knew what he was doing, poaching for something exposing, although she had no idea what a detective on the case would have to hide. But Ryan’s expression seemed to imply that he was biting his tongue to try and refrain from telling her something.

“Look, I just know, okay? The two of them were a pretty bad couple, even worse parents.”

“Do you have kids of your own?” She raised her eyebrow. Jack didn't seem to think Charles was a bad parent, not for a moment.

“No.” Danielle couldn’t help the laugh that escaped from her lips. It had always struck her as odd when people would criticize others for doing a bad job at something they’d never even tried to do themselves. Ryan instantly knew the reason behind her laugh, his dark cheeks flushed in frustration. “I’m not at liberty to discuss specifics.”

“Neither am I,” She countered, throwing down the gauntlet with her words, which Ryan accepted in an instant.

Stepping further into the office, his head cocked to the side.

“You really think that he didn’t do it?” Ryan asked with a chuckle, as though the fate of her ex-partner was hilarious. “You still believe the blatant lies, even though Charles is a bad man.”

“How can you prove that he’s a bad man?”

“I can’t.” He raised a hand as she went to reply, “But mark my words, he’s lying about something.
